8 Major Causes of Foot Pain in Children

Growing pain is the most common cause of foot pain in children. However, an underlying medical condition can also be a reason for foot pain among kids. Young children are extremely active. They are likely to suffer from sore feet as they spend all their time running around in the house and outside.

According to children’s podiatrist, there are several other reasons for sore feet among children. Let us have a look at some of them.

1) Injury: Injuries like a fracture, sprain, or twisting are the main causes of foot pain among children. If your child has suffered an injury recently, it is best to seek the help of a paediatric podiatrist for the treatment of pain.

2) Sever’s Disease: The primary cause of this disease is the growth spurts in children. Sever's disease causes unbearable pain in the feet of a child. This disease is very common among children who are involved in outdoor or sports activities.

3) Athletics’ Foot: This condition is caused by a fungal infection that causes extreme itching between toes. It makes the foot skin extremely itchy, flaky, and dry. It is mainly caused by wearing dirty socks. Some children also catch it in the swimming pool.

4) Improper shoes: Uncomfortable or too tight shoes are also one of the causes of foot pain in children. Ill fitted shoes are the primary cause of blisters on the skin. Blisters can be extremely painful. Therefore, always buy shoes that naturally fit the shape of the foot. Shoes should neither be too tight nor be too loose.

5) Flat Foot: Flat- footedness can be the reason behind the foot pain that extends up to ankles and calf muscles.  It is a condition in which the sole comes in complete contact with the ground. The problem occurs mostly in childhood when the arches of feet are not developed completely.

6) Ingrown toenail: Sometimes, the edge of the nail , grows into the skin.. This causes a lot of pain. It can even lead to an infection in the foot. This problem is extremely common in children, and occurs mainly due to ill-fitting shoes. The infected skin becomes swollen and red.

7) Plantar Warts: These are caused by a virus. Plantar Warts are skin lesions that are formed on the sole. They look like a corn or callus, but they are characterized by tiny black dots within the skin lesion. They can occur anywhere. They mostly occur on the sole, as it is the area that is most susceptible to contract wart virus.

8) Heel Pain: One of the causes of heel pain can be plantar fasciitis. It is an area of the heel bone where the plantar fascia (a thick band of tissue) attaches. Its symptoms include foot tenderness, difficulty in walking, and severe heel pain. Heel pain can be managed with orthotics. You can get good quality orthotics in Adelaide at reasonable costs if you have health insurance with podiatry cover.

The above- mentioned conditions are the most common causes of foot pain in children. To rule out the root cause of the pain, it is best to consult a doctor. Podiatrist in Modbury will suggest you an excellent treatment plan if your child suffers from any of the above condition.
